How To Build Your Own Website

I have a feeling that there will come a time in your life when you realize that you need a website. For some of you, that time has already come. I’ve had more than a couple of folks talk to me about building a website recently. They have really good ideas and I would love to help them out, but I don’t have the time to do it for them and they don’t have the money to hire me.

I’ve taught HTML classes online in the past, but many things have changed and HTML is not always enough to get the job done. There is so much more that goes into the equation. Much of my HTML class information is outdated and every time I’ve tried to update, I realize that there is just so much more than I need to be teaching now to help them understand the big picture and the whole process.

Building a website is not hard. It doesn’t have to be expensive. If you have a computer and are reading this, then you probably have everything you need to build your own website.

A web page is nothing more than a text document that is displayed in a special computer program called a browser. So, really all you have to be able to do to make a web page is type some text into a text editor, save that text as a file on your computer, and then open that file in your browser. You’ve probably already done something very similar to that before. You’ve probably used a program like Microsoft Word or notepad or wordpad on a Windows PC to create a document and then saved that as a file. If you are using a Mac Computer you have probably used something like TextEdit to write something and then save it to your hard drive. After saving those files on your computer, you’ve either gone back to those files to edit or print the document. If you can do that, then you can make your own web page.

A web site is nothing more than a collection of web pages that all interconnect and work together. Several years ago, websites basically did one thing and one thing only – display information. Today, they do basically that same thing, only now they are much more interactive, meaning that not only do they display information but they also collect information from the viewer. They can then display new information based on the input from the viewer. Web sites are now more like web applications meaning they not only just display information but they can store, process, format and manipulate that information as well. Websites can now be much more complex than they were when I started teaching HTML classes. That complexity can be overwhelming. But, it doesn’t have to be. If you learn just a little bit at a time, before long you will be an expert and not even realize it.

If you have questions about building your own website, please let me know. You can either leave a comment below or you can contact me here. I will try to answer all the questions as time permits. If you want or need faster answers, you should consider joining my GOLD mentorship. I have a few openings left. As a GOLD member, your questions get top priority and are usually answered very quickly. There are other benefits to being a GOLD member. You can read about those at my site. This mentorship program allows me to help those people that are really serious about building their dreams.

I will try to answer a lot of the questions here in my blog so that more people can find their answers. My goal is to answer at least one question most every day. I’m not sure I’ll be able to hit that goal, but it’s a good stretch goal for me. We’ll see how it goes. It will also give me a chance to exercise my brain. I always learn more from teaching and helping others, so it should be of mutual benefit to us all. :)
